2022 Australian-American Fulbright Scholar Cohort Announced

102 Australian and American students, researchers, and professionals from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds, have been named in the 2022 cohort of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarships program.

They will each embark on study programs and research projects across Australia and the United States over the coming year, adding to a 75-year legacy of bilateral educational exchange that was created by Democratic Senator J. William Fulbright, shortly after the end of the Second World War.

With projects and study programs in diverse fields ranging from migration studies and entrepreneurship to advanced nanoelectronics and security across the Indo-Pacific regions, this year’s Fulbright Scholars are set to make a significant impact on the two-way channel of knowledge exchange between Australia and the U.S.

Fulbright Executive Director, Professor James Arvanitakis, who took over the role from former U.S.  Ambassador Thomas Dougherty in 2021, was excited about the new avenues for collaboration that these exceptional individuals will unlock over the course of their travels, and beyond:

“Fulbright Scholars are not simply grant recipients who we send to siloed labs and libraries; they are conduits for knowledge and culture who create lasting connections that continue to thrive for years after their initial project has ended. As a Fulbright Scholar myself, I can personally attest to the lasting impact that this experience has on the awardee, their home and host institutions.”

“Senator Fulbright once described our organisation as ‘a modest program with an immodest aim–the achievement in international affairs of a regime more civilized, rational and humane than the empty system of power of the past.’ This year we’ve had a sobering reminder of what happens when regimes revert to these empty, anachronistic power systems. Our hope is that, through Fulbright educational exchange, we can continue to foster peace, goodwill, and knowledge-sharing between nations with the aim of creating leaders who will rise above the outdated, binary worldview we’ve seen playing out in recent times, and bring about a more enlightened view of governance.”

The Fulbright Program in Australia was created via bilateral treaty with the U.S. in 1949, predating the ANZUS Treaty by two years.
