Professor Tim Berra joins Inaugural Class of Ohio State Emeritus Academy

Professor Tim Berra, University Professorial Fellow at Charles Darwin University, Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Evolution, Ecology & Organismal Biology at Ohio State University and recipient of three Fulbright Awards to Australia (1969, 1979 and 2009) has been selected to join the Inaugural Class of the Ohio State Emeritus Academy.

The Ohio State University Emeritus Academy was formally established in September 2014, to support the continued research, scholarship, and creative activity of emeritus faculty members. Prof. Berra has been selected into the inaugural class along with 70 distinguished colleagues, from amongst over 2,300 emeritus faculty.

Prof. Berra attended the recent 65th Anniversary celebrations at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC. He had the opportunity to make a presentation of his books ‘ Darwin & his Children: His Other Legacy’ which is dedicated to the Fulbright Program and two Australian Institutions and ‘A Natural History of Australia’, published by UNSW Press to Ambassador the Hon Kim Beazley AC. Tim was quoted in the Fulbright Commission’s 65th Anniversary booklet as saying “I owe my career to the Fulbright program. The exchange absolutely fosters mutual understanding between US and Australia. It shows that the way things are done in the US is not the only way of doing things. It makes one realize that different is not inferior, and sometimes different is superior.”

Prof. Berra’s third and most recent Fulbright award was in 2009 as a Fulbright Senior Specialist when he travelled to Charles Darwin University to deliver the keynote address at the Charles Darwin Symposium commemorating the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s famous book On the Origin of Species. An ichthyologist, or fish scientist, Prof. Berra is recognised as a leading scholar of Charles Darwin and is the author of over 80 scientific papers and 7 books.
